lily pads and waterfalls

24. June 2008 17:47

An architecture firm in Glasgow has proposed a way to incorporate design and eco-function to help the city reduce its carbon footprint:  Solar Lily Pads on the River Clyde    New York City has joined in and already begun construction of waterfalls on the East River. Danish artist, Olafur Eliasson has designed the exhibit that is to open at the end of June and run until October, from 7am to 10pm daily.   These waterfalls will harness the power of the water and the city will test to see how best this new form of energy can be used - all negated, of course,  by the thousands of tickets that have been purchased on every tourist boat just to cruise by one of these exhibits.  Look out Niagara Falls, we’re even handing out ‘Maid of the Mist’-esque ponchos!  Still, a great new trend is happening in fashion, tourism and economy:  sustainable and recyclable. - Jennifer

the biggest block party ever

24. June 2008 17:27

June 3, 2008 was the annual Museum Mile Festival in NYC. I decided to check it out for the first time, and I ended up really enjoying myself. There are 23 blocks closed off, like a big block party on 5th avenue between 82nd and 105th street. Nine museums are free entrance including the MET and the Guggenheim, two of which are my favorites. I was really interested in seeing the “Superheroes in Fashion” exhibit which was really amazing at the MET and was able to do so for free! There were tons of vendors- a lot of family activates and a whole section just for kids to draw with chalk and make their own works of art. There were so many people-but not in a too crowed type of way-and there were all different ages having a wonderful time. This once a year event was fabulous and I truly recommend going next year. - Kiersten

superheroes: fashion and fantasy

24. June 2008 17:18

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a wonderful exhibit now thru September 1st. I think everyone will enjoy it as all of us in many ways can identify with it.   Met - Superheroes exhibit

Beginning in 1938 with the first appearance of Superman we have been exposed to Superheroes and their costumes. I personally have been aware of many superheroes as when Steven was very young he dressed up as superman. Then when Meg and Steven had Sam and Charlie we lived thru Superman, Spider-Man, Batman to name a few. Recently we saw the movie "Iron Man" and  I remember looking at the exhibit saying that is the outfit Robert Downey wore in the movie and thinking the very same thing when I saw Tobey Maquire’s costume from Spider-Man 3.

In addition they have costumes designed by many outstanding designers shown at the exhibit. Fashion has embraced and responded to what the Superhero represents–the fashionable body and the superhero body come together.

To me this reiterates what I have always felt about our business–the fashion industry. To be a success in it you must know history, economics, art and even mathematics to name a few.  - Dorothy
